COMPANY F, 131ST UPDATE March 17, 2004
Hello to all from Ft Benning. Today we have completed our 8th week of Mobilization training. Since arriving here on January 21,st our soldiers have received a wide variety of training and deployment processing. We began with administrative and medical processing, including numerous vaccination shots for all. Then we moved into the mandatory military training events to include weapons qualification, land navigation, map reading, radio operation, and the use of our newly designed Chemical Protective Suits. I personally hope we never put these suits to the real test!
After the basic skills were covered, we spent a full week in convoy training including a live weapons firing exercise from moving Hummers. This is new training that has been developed to fit current operations in our theater. We then combined convoy training with urban operations training which many of our soldiers enjoyed. This is where we used our basic infantry skills to cordon off and search an area of a city. Although it is highly unlikely that any F Company members will perform this type of duty during our deployment, it is required training for everyone going to our area of operation.
The Alabama and Georgia State Military Departments did an excellent job of preparing our unit. We arrived here well equipped and ready to do our mission. Additionally, we had very few personnel who were deemed medically unable to deploy during the process because of the efforts and screenings that were conducted.
Just as the states prepared the unit, it is evident that each of you, the families, did a superb job in preparing your households for this challenge. The morale of our Company is extremely high and we are ready to do our mission because of the foundation that began in each home. I am convinced that our future success relies heavily on the continued stability in your homes, because this will allow our soldiers to focus on performing at 100%.
Our advance party is currently in country making preparations for our unit’s arrival and we now have a firm departure date. Although this departure will be a very emotional struggle for us all, it is certainly the first step in our mission. Please remember that we expect a minimum of twelve months in country before our demobilization process will begin.
It is our duty and privilege to serve our Great Nation and I thank each family member for the sacrifice you are making daily to allow your soldier to protect our way of life and the security of our country.
I will send out these updates regularly to Cyndi and Debra, our Family Readiness Coordinators. Their tremendous volunteer efforts are a vital part of the continued success of our team and I appreciate their contributions. Maj Bass
