Post 27 Commander Bill Helms (l) and Past Commander Max Spencer (r), accept awards from Department of Georgia Commander Al Smith
(Richmond Hill) – The American Legion JE Lanier Post 27, was recently presented two awards from The American Legion Department of Georgia, for its’ 2001-2002 Program year, accomplishments. Post 27 was presented Plaques by Department Commander Al Smith as Runner-up for Top Overall Post in it’s category, and The Top Post for Children and Youth Programs.
Upon their presentation, Dept Cdr Al Smith said, “This Post has shown what a group of dedicated people can accomplish and serves as a great example of the Legion Ideals of Service to God and Country. These awards are presented based on the local Post programs, which included a Halloween Candy X-Ray with Urgent One, an Essay Contest for the local Middle School, Boys & Girls State Program, its’ Scholarship program, and its’ Veterans Outreach Program, to name but a few. This Post is a true leader in community service here in Georgia.”
Incoming Commander Bill Helms who served as Chairman Children and Youth Programs for the past year said, “Our Post Children and Youth programs are founded on the idea that we must pass along to the young folks that freedom comes with a price, of duty to God and Country. We could not have done what we have without the efforts of our Children and Youth team, and in particular our Post Sponsors throughout Richmond Hill and the Local area.”
These thoughts were echoed by Past Commander Max Spencer, “We have accomplished many good things throughout the year, always with great teamwork and dedication by the Legionnaires involved. Some of our most active members are working full time, raising families, with some even serving on active duty at Hunter AAF and Fort Stewart. When you think of all the effort to bring these programs together it makes the word dedicated seem like an understatement.”
